Welcome to my Weebly website. I am a fourth grade teacher at South Newton Elementary School. Our school campus is a preschool through grade 12 facility located in rural Indiana. I am beginning my twenty-fifth year of teaching. I have taught fourth grade for most of my career, but have also taught fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth grades.

Book Orders
I will be sending home order forms for Scholastic Book Clubs once a month. If you wish to order something for your child, the check must be made out to Scholastic Book Clubs, not to me or to the school or you may send cash in an envelope with your child’s name on it. Scholastic also offers some very good deals on computer software. The students will be told what date the orders are to be returned to me. The points I earn from Scholastic will be used to purchase books for our classroom.
Snacks
The students will be eating lunch at 12:10 They will be starved by then. During my time to read aloud to the students each morning, they may eat a healthy snack. They may share if they have enough for the entire class. They will not be allowed to share with just their “friends.” No candy, guy, pop, or red juices, please. Water bottles are allowed unless they become a distraction in the classroom.
Birthday Celebrations
Please fell free to send a special treat on your child’s birthday, or if you can, come in to the classroom and make it a very special time for your child. We will only have about 15 minutes for a birthday celebration. The time of day will be flexible to help meet your own personal schedules. Candy or pop is OK, but not red juice. Please remember the plates or napkins, cups if needed or plastic silverware. I do not have a supply in my room. Sorry, no home-baked goodies ;(
Visiting the Classroom
My classroom is open to your visits whenever it is convenient for you. I encourage you to come to our classroom and see what we are doing. You need not make prior arrangements before you come in, but you do need to check in at the office and get a visitor’s tag to wear in the building for security reasons.
Conferences
Parent Teacher Conferences will be held in the fall and in the spring. In the fall, I will meet with all the students’ parents. In the spring, I will meet with only the students’ parents whom I am having concerns about or those who request to meet with me. PLEASE contact me any time you have a concern or question about your child’s education. I am usually at school by 7:00am and do not leave until 4:00pm. The school number is 474-5167. My extension is 334. My email is [email protected]
Schedule
The school day begins at 7:45am and ends at 2:55pm. Our Specials Classes are on an eight day rotation and begin at 7:55 until 8:40.
Wednesday Folders
Every Wednesday your child will be bringing home his/her Wednesday Folder. PLEASE take time to go through the important papers placed in the folder and return the folder to school on Thursday.
Harmony
Harmony is the name of our computer grade book and students records. We record your child’s grades, print out progress reports, and report cards. We record discipline referrals and keep attendance. You may access this from home. When report cards are sent home, you are to keep the paper report card, sign the envelope, and return the empty envelope to school. Please mark your calendars so you are aware of what dates to expect progress reports and report cards or check the newsletters for reminders.
ISSB In School Skills Building
Students are arranged in ISSB classes to focus on specific skills that they may be struggling with. This is a great time for your child to work and improve on skills they have not yet mastered. These groups will be changing throughout the year depending on each child’s individual needs.
Nightly Reading
Your child is expected to read every evening for 15 to 20 minutes. Periodically, your child will be asked to report on the book he/she is reading or will be conferencing with me.
Field Trips
What an exciting part of our curriculum! Please be sure to have your child wear their school T-shirt for easy identification purposes on ALL field trips and the correct shoes for the outing. (The Dunes and Turkey Run, walking shoes; State Capitol and Museum, soft, quiet soles.) Sign and return permission slips as soon as possible. Be sure to complete a background check if you want to chaperone at the beginning of the school year or at least a week prior to the scheduled field trip date. Completing a school lunch form and returning it by the due date is critical if you want your child to have a school lunch.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Dewing
